Steven Holl

ARC486 - Senior Seminar

Instructor: Nicholas Hoban

September - December 2020

Located in Shenzhen, China, the Horizontal Skyscraper is a mixed-use architecture designed by Steven Holl Architects, constructed between 2006 and 2009. With a floor area of more than 120, 000 square meters and a maximum height of 35 meters, the architecture contains a complex hybrid of commercial, residential, institutional and recreational zones. This precedent study zooms into moments where the project ambitiously explores new potentials of large-scale public architecture in the form of an urban utopia, pushing existing boundaries of sustainability and structural innovation in the context of modern design.
